At the end of March, the vibrant campus of Delft University of Technology hosted the second Network-Wide Event (NWE2) of the NEUTEN project, bringing together an energetic and diverse group of doctoral candidates for a week of learning, collaboration, and inspiration.
A Week of Synergy and Collaboration
Held between March 23–27 in the charming city of Delft, NEUTEN’s NWE2 was designed as a true synergy event, in a hynrid format: for the first time, the 14 doctoral candidates (DCs) of NEUTEN met in person not only with each other, but also with additional 14 DCs from the sister project, NANAQUA – https://nanaqua.eu/.
The result? A large, effervescent group buzzing with ideas, curiosity, and a shared drive to tackle complex challenges. Over five intense and rewarding days, participants had the opportunity to connect, exchange perspectives, and lay the foundations for future collaborations across projects.

Diving into Advanced Training
The week featured a rich training program combining theory, practical application, and teamwork. Sessions covered a wide range of topics essential for early-stage researchers:
- Classical statistical methods
Including presentations on statistical tests and power analysis for small sample sizes—key tools for rigorous research design. - Advanced statistical techniques
Exploring outliers, robust statistics, and censored data, equipping participants to handle complex and imperfect datasets. - Resource recovery from treatment plants
A hands-on module focused on process design in aerobic and anaerobic systems, culminating in engaging group presentations that showcased both technical understanding and creative problem-solving.
These sessions not only strengthened technical skills but also encouraged interdisciplinary thinking—an essential ingredient for innovation.
From Theory to Practice: A Memorable Site Visit
One of the highlights of the week was a one-day site visit to the renowned Heineken Brewery ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
This experience offered participants a real-world perspective on industrial processes, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical application. It was also a great opportunity to continue discussions in a more informal setting—often where the best ideas emerge.

Insightful Guidance at the Mid-Term Meeting
The final day was dedicated to the NEUTEN Mid-Term Meeting, where the project officer provided valuable insights into best practices, expectations, and future directions.
This session proved to be more than just a formal checkpoint—it was a moment of clarity and alignment for the entire consortium. The guidance offered was both practical and encouraging, supporting not only the doctoral candidates but all project partners involved.
Energized for What Comes Next
Spanning five full days, NWE2 felt both intensive and fleeting. Time passed quickly, but its impact was lasting. With the project now just over 15 months since its official start, many aspects have become clearer—and with that clarity comes momentum.
There is still much to be done, but the energy and enthusiasm generated in Delft are unmistakable. The network is stronger, the goals are sharper, and the commitment is shared.
Now, it’s time to get to work. Let’s make great things together.
